Unusual Jobs

Next Friday is Career Day at Lincoln Middle School. Four guests are coming to talk about their jobs, and none of them works in an office! Here is what they are going to tell the students.

Ice cream taster. Linda works for an ice cream company. She tastes new flavors every day and decides which ones will sell well. "It sounds like a dream, but I have to be careful," she says. "I never eat a whole bowl. I taste a little, and then I spit it out!" Next month, she's flying to Italy to learn about gelato.

Park ranger. Carlos is a ranger in Yellowstone National Park. He protects the animals, helps visitors and teaches them about nature. "Every day is different," he says. "Tomorrow I'm going to count bison. I think it will take all day!"

Golf ball diver. Mike dives into the lakes on golf courses and collects the balls that players lose. Then he cleans them and sells them. "The water is often dark and muddy, and sometimes there are alligators in it," he says. "But I find thousands of balls every week."

Snake milker. Dr. Amy Price works in a laboratory. She "milks" poisonous snakes: she takes their venom. Scientists use it to make medicine for people with snake bites. "I'm going to bring a snake to school," she says. "Don't worry, it won't bite. It's going to stay in a box!"

So what will the students be in the future? "I'm going to be a ranger," says Jake. "I love animals and nature." Bára laughs. "I'll be an ice cream taster. I won't spit it out!"
