Prague: The City of a Hundred Spires

Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic. It is visited by millions of tourists every year, and it is often called "the City of a Hundred Spires". In fact, there are many more than a hundred towers and spires in the city!

Prague Castle. The castle was founded in the 9th century. Since then, it has grown into one of the biggest castle complexes in the world. Kings lived there, and today it is used by the Czech president. In the middle of the castle stands St. Vitus Cathedral. Its building was started in 1344, but it was finished in 1929, almost 600 years later!

Charles Bridge. The famous stone bridge was built in the 14th and 15th centuries. It was named after Charles IV, the most famous Czech king. The bridge is decorated with thirty statues. Today, cars aren't allowed on it. It is used by people who walk, take photos and listen to street musicians.

The Astronomical Clock. On the Old Town Square, there is an old clock that was made in 1410. It is the oldest astronomical clock in the world that still works. Every hour, crowds of people watch the twelve Apostles, little figures that appear in two small windows.

Charles University. It was founded by Charles IV in 1348. It is the oldest university in Central Europe, and it is still attended by thousands of students.

In 1992, the historic center of Prague was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. If you visit it, don't forget comfortable shoes: the best places are seen on foot!
