Conversation Workbook, level B1, lesson 20. Maturita step 2: describing and comparing pictures.

Exercise 3. Listen to the conversation. Two pictures: shopping.

Please compare the two pictures. They're both about shopping.

OK. Both pictures show people shopping, but in very different ways. In the first picture, I can see an outdoor market. In the foreground, there's an old woman buying vegetables, and the man behind the stall is smiling. In the background, there are lots of colorful umbrellas.

In the second picture, there's a young man sitting on a sofa. He's holding a laptop and a credit card, so he must be shopping online. He looks a bit bored. On the left, there's a pile of boxes – he might be waiting for more deliveries.

The main difference is that the woman at the market is talking to people, whereas the man is alone at home. The market looks friendly and relaxed, but online shopping is probably quicker.

Which kind of shopping do you prefer?

I'd prefer to be in the first picture, because I like fresh food and I enjoy the atmosphere. But I buy clothes online, because it's cheaper.

Exercise 4. Your turn. Listen, stop the recording and answer. Then listen to a possible answer.

A. A woman in a picture is yawning at her desk.

How does she feel?

She must be tired. Maybe she's been working all day.

B. Some people are carrying suitcases at an airport.

Where might they be going?

They might be going on vacation. It looks like a family trip.

C. Kids are laughing at a birthday party.

How are they feeling?

They seem to be enjoying themselves.

D.

Where exactly is the dog in the picture?

It's in the foreground, on the left, next to the bench.

E.

What's the main difference between the two pictures?

The main difference is that the first one is in a city, whereas the second one is in the countryside.

F.

Which picture would you prefer to be in?

I'd prefer to be in the second picture, because I love nature.

This is the end of the recording.
