Conversation Workbook, level B2, lesson 3. Presentations and public speaking.

Exercise 3. Listen to the conversation. A presentation: Teenagers and screen time.

Good morning, everyone. Today I'm going to talk about teenagers and screen time. I've divided my talk into three parts: how much time we spend on screens, how it affects us, and what we can do about it.

Let's start with the numbers. As you can see from this chart, the average teenager in our school spends almost seven hours a day on a screen, not counting homework. What's really striking is that only twenty percent of us think that's too much.

That brings me to my next point: the effects. According to a recent survey by the national health institute, students who use their phones after ten p.m. sleep about an hour less. I'd like to stress that sleep affects everything – our mood, our grades and even our sports results.

Let's move on to solutions. This slide shows three simple ideas: no phones in the bedroom, a screen-free hour before bed, and app timers.

To wrap up, screens aren't the enemy, but we need to control them, not the other way round. Are there any questions?

Yes. Is seven hours higher than the national average?

That's a great question. I'm not sure off the top of my head, but I'll find out and send it to the class.

Exercise 4. Your turn. Listen, stop the recording and answer. Then listen to a possible answer.

A. Open your presentation about recycling.

Good morning, everyone. Today I'm going to talk about recycling.

B. Explain the structure.

I've divided my talk into three parts.

C. Move to your second point.

That brings me to my next point.

D. Refer to a chart.

As you can see from this chart, plastic waste has doubled since 2000.

E. Finish your talk.

To wrap up, let me briefly summarize the main points.

F.

How many cities in Europe recycle more than eighty percent?

That's a great question. I'm not sure off the top of my head, but I'll find out.

This is the end of the recording.
