Task two. Four people are talking about their jobs.

Speaker 1.

I'm a nurse in the emergency department. I love helping people, and I've never had problems with stress, but the hours are tough. I work most weekends and holidays, and last Christmas I was at the hospital while my family was having dinner. My friends usually go out on Friday nights, and I'm just starting my shift.

Speaker 2.

At college I studied history, and I really thought I'd become a teacher. But in my last year I took a programming course just for fun, and I loved it. Now I write software for a bank. My colleagues laugh when I start talking about ancient Rome during lunch, but nobody at work cares what my diploma says.

Speaker 3.

Five years ago I was working for a big fashion company, and I was always tired and unhappy. One day I decided to try something on my own. Now I have a small shop where I sell clothes made from old materials. I'm the boss, the designer and the cleaner. I earn less, but I'm much happier.

Speaker 4.

I work as a sales manager for a company that makes farm machines. I spend about three weeks a month on the road, visiting customers in different countries. Last month I was in Brazil, Kenya and Poland. Some people think it sounds exciting, and it is, but sometimes I wake up in a hotel and I don't know what city I'm in.
